Not the extended version. Don't buy. WAIT FOR IT.
I, also am in agreement with all the other low rated ratings. I got my new LED/LCD TV 4 days ago, and of course, I had to buy a blu-ray DVD player. Yesterday, I went to Wal-mart, and just had to purchase my favorite movie of all time, The Lord of the Rings. I was totally bummed out when I realized, after watching the first disc, that this did not have the extended version in it. I paid about 60.00 for it. Had I know this wasn't the extended version, I would have never bought the darn thing, I would of waited.

Tomorrow, I'm taking this back and I hope Wal-mart doesn't give me a hard time about it. I will fight with them over this for sure if they do not take it back.

I'm like everyone else, bought the first version, then the extended version came out, had to go buy it. But they're not going to do it again to me.

Oh, needless to say the blu-ray LOTR looks fab.

Once bitten twice shy
There's not a whole lot to be said that hasn't been said may times over. It's insulting to fans that companies try to nickel and dime consumers with multiple re-releases of the same product. There's no reason the standard and extended editions couldn't be on the same disk, in a branching system, with a simple option at the beginning to select which one you want to watch.

Like many others, I'll just be patient and vote with my wallet, waiting for the extended blu-ray release.

Waiting for both versions on 1 disc
Simply put I will only buy the LOTR Blu-ray when both the theatrical and extended versions are put on the same disc so I have the option to watch whichever version I choose by selecting it from the menu. The sooner they release that, the sooner they get my money.

Why No Extended Edition?!?
So here it is again: WB is trying to double dip with the Blu-ray versions of Lord of the Rings just like they did with the DVD releases. I agree with most of the reviewers here on Amazon that it is disgraceful for this studio to try to make more millions off the same scheme instead of giving us both the theatrical version and the extended cuts and letting the buyers decide which to buy. I was even more upset when I saw that THE STUDIO DOES NOT PLAN TO RELEASE THE EXTENDED CUTS ON BLU-RAY UNTIL LATE 2011 OR EVEN 2012!!!! Its time studios stopped being greedy and did something good for the consumers!

NOTE: As others have said, I am NOT giving a bad review of the LOTR trilogy. It is one of the finest produced set of films I have ever seen. I even decided to rent the theatrical versions on Blu-ray and they do look FANTASTIC (something I suggest you do if you cannot wait to see them in Blu). But I refuse to spend $50 on WB's scheme to make me pay twice.

More than the theatrical release - less than the extended
I've seen all the bad reviews and agree that it would have been nice if they would have come out with the theatrical/extended combo dvds in Blu Ray. However, I did notice that there were scenes in The Fellowship that were not in the theatrical version and were not in the extended version. I don't know if they will or will not remain in the extended version Blu Ray disc. Yes, it's a pain to keep buying these, and maybe even a rip off, but I go through my dvds until they are unplayable, so I find it nice to have extras. Also, I was very interested to see if the Blu Ray movie looked and/or sounded any better than the non-Blu Ray played on a Blu Ray upconverter. I did think the video was better; it was a little harder to judge the sound in movie one. I need to hear the sound in movie 3 (ROTK) to really tell whether or not there's a difference. Right now I am renting these from Netflix to decided whether or not to buy them or wait for the extended version Blu Ray or the combo version Blu Ray. However, I must admit that the completely new scenes were a decidedly pleasant surprise.
