Review by: <3 Rating: unfilled The series is awesome but, when I received the 6 disk series i only got 5 disks. Now I'm stuck with never knowing the ending and that sad. Angel is amazing non the less.
Review by: JME2, Monterey, CA Rating: Welcome to the City of Angels The creation of a new show within a television franchise is a tricky business. The new show must maintain the familiar elements of its parent series or predecessors while establishing its own identity and seeming fresh and new. The creation of a spin-off show centered around a recurring character is an even trickier business. The character may ultimately be unable to carry a show by himself and works better as a supporting player rather than a regular. Creating a show around Angel, the vampire with a soul from the hit "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" was no different, but the skill of Joss Whedon, David Boreanaz, and company made it a show equal to its parent with its first season.

<br />"Angel" opens shortly after "Buffy: Season 3". At the end of that season, Angel had made the decision to leave Sunnydale and Buffy and find his way in the world. Angel has since relocated to Los Angeles, where he is joined by the lovely, if snobbish Cordelia Chase (another recurring character from "Buffy") and Doyle, an Irish half-demon with precognitive visions. The trio undertakes a new mission to, "help the helpless" and opens a detective agency. But this a different locale than Sunnydale. Even without a Hellmouth, Los Angeles is still a hotbed for paranormal activity thanks to Wolframam & Hart, a demonic law firm that comes into conflict with the fledgling detective agency.

<br />The storytelling format is similar to "Buffy" with stand-alone, monster-of-the week style shows. The format doesn't work as well here as it did on its parent show and the later episodes show this as they begin setting up story arcs that will drive the series to its conclusion. This innagural season also overlaps with "Buffy: Season 4" and as such, there are crossovers. Familiar Buffy characters like Oz, Spike, and Buffy herself make appearances and events within the two shows affect each other. It isn't necessary to watch "Buffy" to understand what's going on, but it adds to the fun of seeing the shows overlap.

<br />If you liked "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and were sad to see Angel leave in Season 3, come on over to the City of Angels.
Review by: Alex, Southern USA Rating: Angel Season One Of the 5 seasons of Angel, season one is definitely my favorite. The simple beginnings were so endearing and I especially liked the relationships between characters. I totally miss "Doyle" in subsequent seasons though "WWP" does an outstanding job, they have such different forms of acting, you can't really compare the 2 so it's almost like a different show once characters changed. Although I've seen the entire Angel series several times over, I'm always drawn to season one.

<br />While never up to the level of the Buffy series, Angel is quite entertaining and has a lot of little funny bits. The pilot episode for example has one part where he runs out to his car, jumps in dramatically, tries the key...and nothing. Then he looks over and sees he jumped into the wrong (identical) car; his car is parked a few spaces over.

<br />There is also a great episode involving a bachelor party that should not be missed. How many shows have somebody admonished for bringing a shrimp fork to devour a human brain? The whole episode is very tongue in cheek.

<br />I don't want to give any spoilers, but there is a rather significant change around the middle of the season that I appreciated. You'll see a number of cross-over guests from Buffy to start out the show. At over twenty episodes, the season should keep you satisfied for a while.
